BVD traffic light

Livestock traffic is intensive in Switzerland. As a result, even isolated cases of BVD can quickly lead to major outbreaks. To prevent this and to ensure that cattle holdings are better protected against infection, the cattle industry is working with the Swiss Veterinary Service to make animal traffic safe and sustainably eradicate the BVD virus. The aim is for all cattle holdings in Switzerland to achieve the new BVD-free status from 1 November 2026. The two years from 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2026 will serve as a transition phase from the previous to the new BVD status. Livestock farms can use the BVD traffic light to achieve the new ‘BVD-free’ status during this period. During the two-year transition phase, the BVD traffic light indicates the BVD risk posed by a livestock farm. Livestock farmers can actively protect their herd from BVD by only purchasing animals from farms with a negligible BVD risk that are labelled with a green traffic light.
